PC083 - Mental Health Crisis & Gun Reform: What Legislators Need To Do To Keep Us Safe
I have spent some time around guns, know how to fire a weapon, and am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment so I know a thing or two about what responsible firearm ownership looks like. That’s why the tragic school shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville that killed three adults and three nine-year-old children is so shocking and horrific. Guns aren’t the problem. The problem is who has access to the guns. Our lawmakers are letting us down by failing to pass laws that would keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.
Today, I discuss the real factors that are putting guns in the hands of dangerous people and making schools unsafe for our children. I recount a conversation I had that demonstrates how divided we are as a country and how negative assumptions Democrats have for Republicans are making it impossible to achieve any progress on guns. I also uncover the real reason that guns are dangerous and where lawmakers are falling short of passing gun reform bills that will keep guns out of the hands of gang members and the mentally ill.
“There should be some gun safety, but guns should never be in the hands of a mentally ill person.” - Jennifer Nassour
