008 - Diversity of Thought with Ashley Jacobs of Parents United

PC008 Political Contessa Diversity of Thought

Ashley Jacobs is the co-founder and executive director of Parents Unite, an organization dedicated to working toward diversity of thought in private schools. This desperate need for diversity of thought stems from the oversized role of crediting agencies in determining what types of professional development and resources these schools take advantage of.

Today, Ashley joins me to talk about this issue and what she’s doing about it. She pinpoints the problem, noting that it leads to a culture of avoiding making waves. She explains why this is directly counter to the purpose of education, which is for kids to be challenged, learn, and grow. She discusses the fear of being cancelled and the tyranny of kindness. She notes that, in many cases, moderation is the answer, and she stresses the need for common sense and rational thinking. She discusses the role of teachers as moderators rather than commentators, and she shares her thoughts on her organization’s Diversity of Thought Conference.

“You’re always talking about the same things, you’ve dumbed it down, you’re living in an echo chamber. You really don’t know how to defend yourself against anything because you haven’t been exposed to it, so essentially, you’re not well-educated.”

- Ashley Jacobs
